'Fleabag' stage show coming to Amazon — for charity
Fleabag is returning to Amazon — just not the way fans might have expected. The award-winning comedy will likely never get a third season, but creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge's one-woman stage show that inspired it will soon be online.
A recorded 2019 performance of Waller-Bridge's Fleabagrevival tour in London will be available for a 48-hour download on Amazon in the U.S. and U.K., and the SoHo Theatre's on demand website in the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada.
Proceeds from all purchases will go to healthcare workers and artists affected by COVID-19 as it overwhelms medical personnel and shutters performance venues. TodayTix, Waller-Bridge, and her production company have made the initial donation and setup a GoFundMe for more. The newly-formed Fleabag Support Fund will provide grants to freelance theater workers in the U.K.
“I hope this filmed performance of Fleabagcan help raise money while providing a little theatrical entertainment in these isolated times," Waller-Bridge said in a statement per The Hollywood Reporter. "Thank you to all our partners and to the creative team who have waived their royalties from this production to raise money for such vital causes in this unbelievably challenging situation. All money raised will support the people throughout our society who are fighting for us on the frontlines and those financially devastated by the crisis, including those in the theatre community."
She added: "Thank you in advance to those who donate. Now go get into bed with Fleabag! It’s for charity!”
Fleabagwill be available for download April 10. The U.K. and Ireland can access it on SoHo On Demand now.
